CMCOEM Certification Requirements: Mexican College of Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery

Board Certified Surgeon

Requirements for Certification 2017 – 2019

Taking as precedent the agreements that establish the guidelines that regulate the practice of bariatric surgery in Mexico, published in the DOF in 2009, the Mexican College of Surgery for Obesity and Metabolic Diseases AC. (CMCOEM) has taken the initiative to integrate a certification process in obesity surgery that aims to select bariatric surgeons and patient safety.

Publication from the Official Journal of the Federation

On 01/09/2011 was published in the DOF the decree by which articles 81, 83, and 271 were reformed and by which the articles 272 Bis, 272 Bis 1, 272 Bis 2, 272 Bis 3 of the General Health Law was added. In which it was established that the Medical Specialties Boards that have a suitability declaration and are recognized by the National Normative Committee of Medical Specialties Boards, constituted by the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico, the Mexican Academy of Surgery and the Specialty Boards Members, are empowered to issue certificates of their respective medical specialty. Likewise, it is established in:

Article 272 Bis. – To perform any specialty surgical medical procedure, professionals require:

I. A specialist license legally issued by the competent educational authorities.

II. A current specialist certificate that accredits capacity and experience performing the corresponding procedures and techniques in the matter, according to the Lex Artis Ad Hoc of each specialty, issued by the specialty Board as appropriate, in accordance with the article 81 of the current Law.

A medical Specialist may belong to a medical group whose bases of organization and operation will oversee associations, societies, colleges or federations of professionals in their specialty; groups that are responsible for ensuring the professionalism and ethics of the experts in this medical practice.

Based on our current legislation, it has been concluded that the certification must be in agreement with the Mexican Board of General Surgery (CMCG), to provide high ethical and legal value in compliance with the aforementioned indications.

Benefits of Board Certification:

  1. Supports surgeon’s ability to evaluate patients with obesity who are candidates for bariatric surgery.
  2. Supports the type of surgical treatment offered by the surgeon.
  3. Reduces the risk of surgical complication.
  4. Improves the post-operative outcomes.
  5. Commits the professional update.
  6. Provides an important tool to provide multidisciplinary management to patients with obesity.
  7. Gives security and confidence to the patients.
